If you are a restless traveler, then you should know that you’re far from alone. It is estimated that one in three people are nervous about having to fly, or even travel in general. Many travelers are nervous about the outcome of their trip, and some tend to engage in specific routines before setting off. Downloading movies to watch on the plane or enjoying a glass of wine in the airport bar are common behaviors for people that are about to set off. At Your CBD Store in San Antonio, TX, we understand just how nerve-wracking travel can be.

More and more people are using CBD products derived from cannabis every year to help overcome anxiety and insomnia, among other things. If you use CBD for anxiety, you might be wondering if it’s legal to take with you as a way to settle your fear of flying or for other therapeutic purposes when traveling and at the airport. Because CBD is not regulated the same way throughout the country, it makes sense to feel nervous about bringing it with you when traveling. You might be wondering: “Can I get on a plane with my CBD products? Can I bring CBD oil onboard? What about CBD food and candy?”

Can I Bring My Vape Pen on a Plane?

This is a very common question to ask, and the short answer is “yes” as long as it’s in your tote bag and hasn’t been checked with your suitcase. TSA regulations prohibit electronic cigarettes, pens and battery vaporizers in checked bags because of the risk of batteries exploding and being a hazard to the aircraft.

According to the TSA, vape pens “can only be carried in an aircraft cabin.” A word of warning though: just because a pen is allowed on the aircraft, it is not a good idea to make use of it while seated and inflight. Smoking on planes is still considered a federal crime, and vaping is also treated the same way. You’re better off if you avoid turning on the device. You might also want to disconnect the battery to avoid having a pen that accidentally turns on.

Can My Vape Pen Contain CBD Oil?

Fortunately, the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) has released new guidelines on medical marijuana and CBD products this year. What does it mean? First, marijuana is still illegal throughout the country, although it is increasingly endorsed at the state level. Although you can theoretically fly around airports like LAX or Denver International Airport with marijuana containing THC, it is illegal to introduce this cannabis through TSA security.

What does this mean for CBD oil? Now that TSA has been introduced to Epidiolex, the first FDA-approved drug to treat epilepsy in children, the company decided to change its regulations. This means that cannabis originating from CBD, which constitutes the majority of CBD products sold in the US, is valid if it meets the requirements of the 2018 Farm Bill, which requires CBD products containing less than 0.3% CBD to be legal at a federal level. Also, CBD liquids must comply with TSA rules that state the total amount is less than 3.4 ounces if stored in a carryon bag.

It is also important to maintain an awareness of the state laws for the destination you are planning to travel to. While CBD with less than .3% THC is legal at a federal level, some states continue to view CBD and all cannabis products as wholly illegal. Attempting to trick the TSA or trying to sneak your CBD onto a flight regardless of the rules is never a good idea, and could get you in serious trouble. Carrying a copy of your verified third-party lab results to show the contents of your CBD product is a valuable tool to have available when traveling with CBD to prove exactly what is inside your vape pen.
